i was watching this show about people hand-raising flocks of birds. and that got me thinking about how generations of people come to be. it's generally a single offspring at a time, but a number of species do the same thing. then those few offspring over a few years are taken care of for a long time, which, as far as i know, has no analog.

i'm not suggesting we need to increase production. only that i'm curious how we got to where we are reproductively.
