i think that capitalist entities need to have their own hippocratic oath. rather than being tied to making profit for shareholders, companies should have more basic rules that must be adhered to first (think asimov's rules for robots).

i was thinking something along the lines of the following:
1. first, do no harm.
2. benefit to society has preference to benefit to the few.
3. profit is a goal, not the goal.

imagine if the banks, brokerages, wall st (in general), enron, worldcom, healthsouth, tyco - let alone every other company as well - were focused on making things better rather than sucking people dry. it doesn't even make sense how much different life would be. how much simpler, less tedious, less expensive, healthier, more open, more honest, friendlier, better life would be.
