i use spoons opposite of their namesake. soup spoons (deeper, rounder) are good for a lot of things other than soup, and are best for cereal, in my estimation. they allow for a lot of milk per bite so as to keep the necessary cereal:milk ratio at the appropriate level. tea-type spoons (ovally, shallow) are better for soups or ice cream. keep the amount of extreme temperature foods per bite to a reasonable level.
also, plastic spoons are useless, and sporks serve no purpose.
